I remembered long before this reread about the ‘I keep my promises’ scene just before this one, but I hadn’t realized that even back then there were signs that Beato was trying to push Battler to keep up the fight and not surrender.
And even though he does end up doing exactly that in this very Episode…the game doesn’t end. Normally the game would end if the human side surrendered body and soul to the witch, which is what we’re supposed to believe happened when Battler became furniture, but the game did not end. It continued and gave him the chance he needed to come back and continue the fight.
